Bonjour! from CHEZ LONNY, Les lacs de l'Eau d'heure.
It's Winter solstice at 17:28 Belgium time (2017), today. This is the most shorter day as the sun shows him/her-self in the year for Northern.
Ancient people are often seeing the god in the Sun. Because it is giving the natural life energy to the earth. Then ancient people expressed Winter solstice as "dearth of the sun god", as Mitra, Mithra, Maitreya, Metteyya, Artemis, Apollon etc, in the world.
For example, Shinto is telling there is three elements which is the most important to us: the sun(太陽), the moon(月), and the earth(地球) as it is purely natural worship. Then we call the sun god as Amateru (M) / Amaterasu (F).
Here we have Arduinna as the goddness of Ardennes.
However, in fact, day time will be longer and longer until summer solstice. And, ancient people believed " The sun will re-birth after 3 days of his/her dearth" ( winter solstice around 21/22 December ) then made celebration of "anniversary" of the Sun god on that day. This is the origin of the festivity of Christmas ( 24/25 December ). Ancient people may consider Winter solstice as new year's day. So...
A Happy New Year!?!? 🎌
Also, le gairn de Gavrinis is a well known ancient ceremony center which established about 3,500 years ago. One of its entrance was built for the direction of Winter solstice. It's also good example to show how it is important to ancient civilization.

Anyway, we have "Saint-Nicolas" on 6th December in Belgium, and this is traditionally very important event in this area, especially for kids. the legend of "Sain-Nicolas" is based on "Nicolas of Myra" ( abut 270-345 AD ) , then "Saint-Nicolas" turned "Sinterklaas" in Dutch, also ”Santa Clause" in English in 1800s.
Those two stories combined well somehow and somewhere, and we have "Christmas" what we are thinking now. 😄 Then still, it is the most important event for kids!
Isn't it interesting? Please tell us which name your sun god has in your area on the comment below. Enjoy your holiday season!
